Custody Journal Example

Sample journal. Not a real family, not a real case, and not a result in court. Parent A, Parent B, and "the child" are labels so you can see the format.

A useful custody journal entry is short, dated, and specific. The five notes below are the kind of week many parents need to remember: a normal exchange, a late pickup, a school email, an expense, and a weekend that did not happen. Copy the shape, not the story.

Sample · March 6, 2026 · 6:02 p.m. · Exchange

Friday pickup on time

Scheduled pickup 6:00 p.m. at the school parking lot. Parent A arrived at 5:52 p.m. Parent B and the child arrived at 6:01 p.m. Backpack and homework folder came with the child. No disagreement. Proof: none needed beyond this note.

Sample · March 8, 2026 · 6:48 p.m. · Exchange

Sunday return 41 minutes late

Return scheduled 6:00 p.m. at the same parking lot. Parent A texted at 6:12 p.m.: "I am here for the return. What is your ETA?" Parent B replied at 6:14 p.m.: "Running behind." They arrived at 6:41 p.m. Parent B said, "We had to finish dinner." The child said the homework folder was at Parent B's home. Proof: screenshot 2026-03-08-return-text.png.

Sample · March 11, 2026 · 9:20 a.m. · School

School email about a missed assignment

Teacher emailed both parents at 9:14 a.m. The child did not turn in a reading log due March 10. Parent A replied-all at 9:20 a.m. that the log would come in on March 13. Proof: school email saved as 2026-03-11-reading-log.pdf.

Sample · March 12, 2026 · 3:15 p.m. · Expense

Prescription copay

Parent A paid a $15 pharmacy copay for the child's inhaler. Receipt attached. Parent A texted Parent B the amount and a photo of the receipt at 3:40 p.m. and asked to split it under the order. No reply the same day. Proof: receipt 2026-03-12-pharmacy.jpg.

Sample · March 20, 2026 · 5:40 p.m. · Missed parenting time

Weekend refused by text

Parent A's weekend was scheduled from Friday 6:00 p.m. to Sunday 6:00 p.m. At 5:40 p.m. Parent B texted: "We already made plans. He is not coming." Parent A still went to the parking lot at 5:55 p.m. and left at 6:20 p.m. The child did not come. No makeup time was offered that night. Proof: text screenshot and a photo of the empty pickup spot. A blank version of this note is on the denied visitation log.

What these entries have in common

Each one names the date, the plan, the fact, and the file. None of them explain why the other parent is a bad person. The on-time Friday is in the journal on purpose. If you only write the hard days, the record has no context.

If you are starting from zero, use the first entry for the most recent exchange you remember clearly, and label anything reconstructed as reconstructed. The longer piece is how to keep a custody journal for court. A year of overnights, as a schedule rather than a diary, is the parenting time calculator.

Write the next one about your week

Custody Journal gives you the same fields: a date, a note, and a place for the screenshot or receipt. The sample above is not in the product. Your first real entry can be one exchange.
