The standard order applies when the parents do not agree. They may change it by agreement. If dates conflict, the order of priority is the children's birthdays, then Mother's Day and Father's Day, then holidays, then summer and breaks, then weekends, then weekdays.

Juvenile courts for unmarried parents may use a different schedule.

Overnight estimate

Standard weekends outside summer (2026)

  • Residential parent: 313 overnights (85.8%).
  • Non-residential parent: 52 overnights (14.2%).

Friday and Saturday nights every other weekend, starting the first Friday. Wednesday 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. is not an overnight.

Summer replaces this pattern with alternating weeks. School end dates vary, so those summer weeks are not in this count. Same-day holiday hours do not add a night by themselves.

Ohio R.C. 3119.231 references 90 overnights for a child support deviation. This count is an estimate, not advice. R.C. 3119.231.
